Two hours of lecture and six hours of laboratory per week. Problems in the representation of quantitative and qualitative data on thematic maps.

CLASS OVERVIEW AND POLICIES
The Course. This course is designed as an introduction to cartographic methods, design, interpretation and history. Students will learn to map qualitative and quantitative data and master the basic principles of visual presentation of information and to prepare maps for publication. These goals will be accomplished through lectures and by learning the cartography industry’s standard computer programs. Students will learn to interpret and critique thematic maps and map editing techniques. Students will also become familiar with the history of cartography and the political implications of mapping.

Assignments and Grading. There are eight (8) computer assignments, three (3) cognitive mapping exercises, one (1) map library assignment, one (1) map editing assignment, two (2) book chapter reports, and one (1) final project. There is a midterm exam but not a final exam; the final project will count as a final exam. The total number of points possible is 1,000. See the class schedule for a complete list of assignments and their points value.

Assignments are due at 10 a.m. on the date stated in the course schedule. Late assignments will be marked down. Assignments may be re-done within one week of the due date for additional points but only assignments turned in on time will be eligible for a perfect score. Book reports and final projects may not be late.

Attendance. Lectures and computer labs are mandatory. There are no make-up labs. If you must miss a class, the lab instructions will be available to you but it will be your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the information.

Enrollment. This class is offered annually and fulfills the Geography Department’s methodology requirement. Admissions priority is given to Geography seniors.

Reading. Required texts: Cartography: Thematic Map Design. Dent, 5th edition., In place of the previous book there will be a reader. This change is in the interest of the student's budget. The same pages will be required reading but made available at a much lower cost. The reader is available at Copy Central on Hearst (at Euclid).
The following book requirements are unchanged:
Goode's World Atlas. Goode, et al., 20th edition., The Mapmakers. Wilford, revised edition. Reading assignments are to be completed prior to class on the day they appear in the schedule.

Lab Access. Students will be issued a door code to gain access to the cartography lab. Students will also be issued a key to the building (McCone Hall). Your McCone Hall key must be turned in before you will receive a grade. If you do not turn in your key at the end of the semester you will receive an Incomplete for the course (which has a fee attached to it). Because all grades for a course must be submitted together there will be no allowance for late keys. Keys are due the last day of class! To retain your lab access code see Don Bain.
No food or drink is allowed in the cartography lab at any time!

Fee Summary. There are none beyond your tuition and units fees.

Equipment. Each student is required to bring one zip disk to class every session. It is recommended that the zip disk be formatted for Macintosh (in some cases PC formatted disks may be appropriate). The zip disk must be 100mb in storage capacity. Each student is also required to have an assortment of four (4) colored pens (not pencils). Colored pens should be fine point and not include black. Also, each student will need at least one high-lighter pen.

Lab Assistance. There will be at least one lab intern to assist students with computer assignments. The lab intern will choose a two hour session when they will be available every week. The intern’s name and lab hours will be posted in the cartography lab. The instructor will also be available for lab assistance on a limited basis. Keep in mind that the instructor has other obligations within the Geography Department and is not available for lab assistance at all times that he is present in McCone Hall.
