The Geography Department now has a presence on Flickr’s public imagery site, The Commons.

The Commons hosts many historical collections from key libraries and archives worldwide, with the goal of sharing “hidden treasures from the world’s public photography archives.”

We have uploaded our first collection of images onto the site; a selection from the inherited slide collection of Urbain J. Kinet, a world traveler, adventurer and educator. Over time we will scan and post images from our lantern slide collection of early California.

We encourage members of our department to review The Commons site and consider whether this would be a good fit to bring their teaching and research image collections into the public sphere. Images posted on the site must be free of copyright. The images will be open for use by others, though we request that images that are used are credited to the photographer, the collection and the department.
