The sunset as we crossed the transient snow line on the Llewelyn Glacier was made even more colorful than usual by a forest fire off to the north. Up to this point we had been skiing down the Llewelyn Glacier from the divide between the Mathes Glacier (a tributary of the Taku Glacier) and the Llewelyn Glacier (see
map). The water from the Mathes Glacier takes about a 30 mile journey to the sea, going south to the Taku Inlet. The water from the Llewelyn Glacier has a 3,185 km (2000 miles) journey down the Yukon River to the Bering Sea to look forward to. This divide is the ultimate source of the Yukon River. At times on the ski from the divide we roped up as we went through crevasse fields that were mostly covered with snow. To continue from here, we took off our skiis and put on crampons to walk on the blue ice.
