The Berkeley Space Station: A Hub for Sonic Geographies and Media Innovation

February 16, 2026

Our department is proud to announce the launch of the Berkeley Space Station, a 24/7 streaming radio station where we curate and create sonic works that explore with Place, wonder amidst Space, and entwine in Time.

The department radio station, spearheaded by Joel Wanek, is located on the first floor of McCone Hall in what was once a windowless storage room. Outfitted with soundproofing, recording equipment, and editing software, the Berkeley Space Station will offer students hands-on experience in audio storytelling, while providing a platform to share geographic perspectives on community, place, and environment.

Current programming includes:

  • Spatial Delight, a podcast celebrating the life & work of Doreen Massey
  • Ferguson Interview Project, an archive of interviews conducted in the St. Louis area following the murder of Michael Brown
  • Early radio works of Scott Carrier, a highly influential radio pioneer at NPR and other outlets
