Geography PhD candidate Clara Pérez Medina has published "Framing Displacement, Forcing Perspective: Black Visual Geographies and the Crisis of Homelessness in Oakland" in Antipode. The article examines how news photography of homelessness in Oakland uses techniques like framing, depth of field, and composition to construct Black residents as out of place within an unmarked white spatial order. Drawing on Black geographies and visual studies, Pérez Medina argues that these visual strategies naturalize displacement by rendering homeless encampments as disruptions to be cleared rather than as products of decades of racialized housing policy. Congratulations, Clara!
