Geography Chair Desiree Fields Discusses Impact of Climate Change on Homeowners

November 24, 2025

Geography Chair Desiree Fields recently shared their expertise on climate risk, urban futures, and social change on two major stages: a Social Science Matrix panel on climate disaster insurance and, just last week, as the Distinguished Speaker for the Critical Urban Anthropology Association at the American Anthropological Association’s annual meeting.

As part of the Matrix's On Point event series, "Financializing Disaster: Insurance and the Climate Crisis" hosted a panel discussion to examine how climate change, urban planning and insurance instability are currently reshaping the nation’s housing landscape. The panel featured Stephen Collier, Dave Jones, and Desiree Fields, and was moderated by Meg Mills-Novoa. The Social Sciences Division published an article recapping the event, and a video recording will be made available on the Social Science Matrix site.

As the Distinguished Speaker for the Critical Urban Anthropology Association at the American Anthropological Association’s annual meeting in New Orleans, Fields's talk, California Forever? Speculating on ‘New Cities’ in the Wild Frontier, explored contemporary urban speculation and emerging visions of development in California.

Congratulations on these impactful contributions to public scholarship and interdisciplinary dialogue, Desiree!
