Mikey is a Ph.D. candidate at the Geography Department at UC Berkeley and in parallel, he works as a Graduate Student Researcher at Berkeley Lab/LBNL and as a Program Manager/Team Lead at the United Nations Volunteering Program (MDF Papua New Guinea). His current research primarily focuses on the applications of remote sensing data (such as NASA GEDI space-borne LiDAR, airborne LiDAR, UAV imagery, and/or open-source optical data) and statistical/machine learning methods for understanding how regenerating tropical forests respond (e.g. carbon sequestration capacity, growth rates, etc.) to climate change-induced droughts (e.g., El Niño) in the Brazilian Amazonia. Another interesting fact about Mikey is that he embraces changing living environments and espouses a nomadic lifestyle; he has been to over 30+ countries in the past decade and has enjoyed living alongside diverse communities in Chile, Mexico, Thailand, Spain, and India among others.
