Matthew Shutzer

We are pleased to share that Matthew Shutzer, Ciriacy-Wantrup Postdoctoral Scholar in Geography, has won the Jack Goody Prize, an in-house award at CSSH for an article that "best represents the mission of the journal" in a given year. Matthew's article, “Subterranean Properties: India’s Political Ecology of Coal, 1870-1975,” traces the surprising and often counterintuitive history of legal claims along India’s mining frontier. This remarkably original and densely documented work combines environmental history, the history of capitalism and the study of the post-colonial transition in legal and political-economic regimes.

Congrats, Matthew!
