Alex Chow

Alex Yong Kang Chow is a PhD candidate in Human Geography at the University of California, Berkeley, with a Designated Emphasis in Political Economy. His research examines Hong Kong’s postwar transformation through the lenses of global political economy, empire, and affect, tracing how successive generations have contested and reimagined the meaning of “freedom” from the 1960s to the present.

Drawing on multi-sited archival research in the United Kingdom, the United States, and East Asia, as well as diaspora interviews, his work situates Hong Kong within broader trans-Pacific financial, constitutional, and migratory networks. He is particularly interested in how monetary regimes, colonial governance, migration, and diaspora formation intersect with racial capitalism and geopolitical restructuring.

Beyond his academic research, he is committed to public scholarship and cross-border dialogue, engaging questions of diaspora politics, democratic resilience, and knowledge production across communities.
