The Judith Lee Stronach Baccalaureate Prize “supports intellectual and creative pursuits that heighten awareness of issues of social consciousness and contribute to the public good. The award gives motivated students the opportunity to extend and reflect upon their undergraduate work at Berkeley by undertaking a special project after their graduation."
Congratulations to Geography Senior, Cole Haddock, and Maria Toldi who have been jointly awarded the 2025 Judith Lee Stronach Baccalaureate Prize for their project, Swept off the Map.
Swept off the Map builds on Cole and Maria's ongoing work with unhoused residents of encampments in Berkeley and Richmond. The project develops a comprehensive database and interactive map of encampment sweeps in four Bay Area cities, supplemented with policy analysis and oral histories of unhoused encampment residents. Inspired by critical cartographic praxis, the project will infuse public records of sweeps with the experiences of residents while making visible the extent of sweeps locally. The project will be published by Street Spirit, continuing the pair’s ongoing collaboration with the news organization.
