Martin Pasqualetti Honored as 2026 AAAS Fellow

April 22, 2026

Martin (Mike) Pasqualetti, Berkeley Geography alumnus and expert on energy systems and their social dimensions, has been elected a 2026 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)! He is being recognized for his distinguished contributions to advancing understanding of the landscapes shaped by society’s ongoing demand for energy.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Pasqualetti has served as a professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University and as a senior global futures scientist in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. His research and publications have consistently explored the connections between energy development and society, including energy education, energy security, the social acceptance of renewable technologies, and the evolution and restoration of energy landscapes.

His scholarship centers on the intersections of energy systems, land use, and renewable energy transitions. His current work focuses particularly on how societies respond to renewable energy landscapes and how former energy sites can be reimagined and repurposed over time.

Pasqualetti is also a dedicated educator and prolific author, having written books on topics such as wind power, renewable energy landscapes, the geography of energy, nuclear power plant decommissioning, and landscape change. He has published more than 100 articles and book chapters on energy and environmental themes.

We extend our warm congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
