Special Funds

The Geography Department has many special funds you may contribute to, from The Allan Pred Fellowship in Critical Human Geography to undergraduate scholarships for field research and cartography. And the Geography Department joyfully accepts gifts to our general fund that go toward continuing our commitment to outstanding undergraduate instruction and graduate research.

  • Donating to Special Funds
    At the present time, only some UC Berkeley Foundation funds are available through give.berkeley.edu. You may still make a credit card gift or pledge payment by calling Gift Services at 510.643.9789. Or, you may make a donation to your fund by completing and sending in this standard form. In the ”Designate my gift/pledge to“ field, provide as much information as you can about the gift or pledge payment you are trying to make. A University representative will contact you if they cannot determine a proper match.

The Geography Department General Fund
This various donors fund is used to support numerous activities in the Geography Department, such as graduate student conference travel, colloquia, and student awards.

Allan Pred Fellowship in Critical Geography
Established to honor the memory of Professor Allan Pred. Awards will be made to graduate students working in critical human geography.

Douglas R. Powell Field Geography Fund
Established in memory of long-time Lecturer Douglas R. Powell to support instructional field-based activity in Geography.

James J. Parsons Graduate Student Student Award
Established in 1997 to honor the memory of Professor James J. Parsons. Awards will be made to graduate students working in the myriad areas of interest to Professor Parsons.

James J. Parsons Scholarship for Undergraduate Field Research in Geography
Established in 1997 in memory of James J. Parsons. This award Geography provides support for Berkeley Geography majors with good academic standing who have undertaken or plan to undertake field research in geography. Research topics could range from studying social and geographical changes in the inner-city to the physical geography of landslides or desert landscapes.

Kenneth & Florence Oberholtzer Graduate Fellowships

Lucille McClish Oberlander Award in Physical Geography
Established in 1989 in memory of Lucille McClish Oberlander. An annual monetary prize is made to the outstanding geography major in physical geography.

The Cartography Award
An annual monetary award is made to a geography student who has done outstanding work in cartography.
